Data Collection in early Colonial Mexico: The case of History of the Mexicans by their Paintings [Research Seminar Series, April 3]

School of Humanities Research Seminar, Weds 3 April 16:00, Humber Lecture Theatre (GEG31)

This talk by Dr. Victoria Rios Castano, Lecturer in Spanish at Coventry University, offers an overview of an anonymous manuscript of ethnographical content (Historia de los mexicanos por sus pinturas), which is believed to have been written at the end of the first half of the sixteenth century, and has been attributed to the Franciscan Fray Andrés de Olmos. An analysis of relevant passages seems to uncover the method that the author/s applied to the gathering of data and takes us to discuss its links with confessional and inquisitorial techniques, with which Olmos was very familiar.
