For most people the opportunity to study at university only comes around once. You normally have one to three years to achieve a degree, whilst developing the skills that employers want from a well-rounded graduate in order to secure your ideal job when you leave. So, what can you do to maximise your time at the London Campus?
This may sound like an obvious one, but the number of students who leave university without doing any work experience would surprise you. This is your opportunity to put the theory and skills which you have learnt into practice and to gain experience and evidence for your CV. Work experience can be anything from a summer internship opportunity, to a day or week work shadowing with a local company or even a part-time job in the evenings or at weekends. These are all great ways to build your employability skills of effective team working, communication and adaptability. Research local and renowned companies, prepare and tailor your approach, present yourself at ‘your best’ and stay positive.
Find out what extra-curricular activities your university has to offer and get involved – employers want to see that you have interests and a life outside of work. At the London Campus, we have a range of academic based societies such as the HR society, alongside sports and cultural groups. Adding President of the Trading Society, football team coach, student mentor or student representative to your skills and experience on your CV goes a long way. Getting involved in free London Campus programmes such as High Flyers, Synergy or Get Ahead will also help you to build essential skills including teamwork, networking, confidence and presentation, whilst making new friends and having fun.
Think about the area of work or the business sector you want to go into, are you aware of the current trends, business challenges or news in this area? To keep up to date, why not investigate which social media platforms you can use in a professional manner to increase your knowledge, understanding and commercial awareness. Follow companies that you admire and aspire to work for on twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn and engage in their online conversations. Set up a LinkedIn account and continue to update it on a regular basis – you never know what connections or job opportunities may arise from this alone. Or why not consider writing your own blog based on your work interests or passion. You can be on one platform or a number, but regardless social media is about being engaged, active and above all professional.
We may live in a world that is technologically advanced, but this doesn’t mean that “word of mouth” no longer exists. Attending careers fairs, exhibitions or any other event is a great way to meet new contacts and start up a conversation. Even business cards still exist so don’t forget to ask for one, or exchange yours.
