Are you ready to start your first year at uni? Leaving home can be both exciting and scary! You ask yourself all sorts of questions, what will uni life be like? Will I like the area? Will the exams and coursework be difficult? Will I make friends? What if I don’t like my course? But don’t worry, everyone going into their first year of uni is in the same situation as you and there’s nothing to be nervous about. Ask yourself these questions to see if you’re ready.
Have you secured a place to live?
Student accommodation in London is still available if you’d like to live in student halls. Otherwise you do have the option to look for private house share. The following websites are handy:
Are you ready financially?
Open a student bank account, MoneySavingExpert is a great website that shows you how to bag the best deals!
Have you set up a student budget?
Many students blow all their money in the first few weeks and scrimp to make it until they receive their next loan payment or salary. The best thing you can do is set yourself a student budget, so you can put a certain amount aside for rent and bills (if you’ll be paying these), x amount for the weekly food shop, put some aside for emergencies and a little bit for the fun stuff like partying!
Can you cook? If not then learn!
You don’t want to spend all your money on eating out, and it’s not healthy either! The cheapest and healthiest option is to make home cooked meals. If you don’t know how, learn – ask family and friends to teach you quick recipes.
Do you need any course materials before you start?
Find out if you need to get any course materials before you start and if you can, get ahead with your reading. Sometimes Lecturers send reading material to you prior to you starting a course.
Have you thought about transport options?
Will you be staying in student accommodation or private house share which is a walk away from the university, or will you need to do some travelling? Oyster Travel cards are great to use on buses and trams and a lot of our students choose to purchase these. When studying with Coventry University London you are eligible for a student Oyster Card which allows you to get 30% off all travel in London!
Have you packed everything?
Make a checklist of all your uni essentials – from duvets and pyjamas, to cutlery, washing up liquid, your whole wardrobe and anything else important to you!
