Badminton at Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre

Every Monday between 5:30pm and 7:30 pm, the Coventry Sports Centre hosts ‘No Strings’ Badminton sessions. One might ask, what does ‘no strings’ mean and why is it important?

The ‘No strings’ Badminton programme started 3 years ago as a nationwide initiative to encourage people to play sports, offering adequate kit and a great location where people can play badminton at a discounted rate. The concept of ‘no strings’ badminton can be defined as fun sessions based on fitness and socialising.

The programme provides a local, relaxed & completely flexible playing opportunity for anyone who enjoys playing badminton, but doesn’t want to make a commitment to joining a club or can’t always find the right partner to play against. With equipment provided (rackets and shutters), you only need to bring sporty, comfortable clothes and shoes. Make sure you bring something to drink – you’ll need it!

There are 12 different courts, where you can play 1 to 1 or doubles. Coming alone or with your friends, it’s the perfect way to do sport in a fun and relaxed environment.

Richard, the programme co-ordinator is really outgoing and keen on helping everyone by teaching you the basics of badminton or helping you improve your technique (even if you consider yourself a pro!) You only need to turn up at these sessions and start playing. No booking is required, so it can’t get any easier than this! You can come anytime between 5:30pm and 7pm, and leave any time you want.

If you don’t have a partner to play with, don’t worry – Richard will pair you up with someone who’s at the same sport level as you: beginner, intermediate or advanced. It is a great way to meet new people as you learn together; no need to be shy of the way you serve and don’t compare yourself with others, everyone learns at their own pace and with the help of Richard and your partner you will be able to master badminton in a jiffy.

However, if you’re keen with playing with your friends, you have the right to choose your partner, although people are encouraged to change partners throughout the session – it keeps the atmosphere dynamic and offers you the chance to meet people with the same hobby, from students to Coventry locals! 🙂

If the opportunity to meet new people and if the free training coach wasn’t enough to convince you give badminton a go, the discount rate will: from the usual £8,50 an hour, on Monday the fee is only £2,50! It’s worth giving it a try – you’ll enjoy it for sure!

Let us know about your experience at ‘no strings’ badminton!

Until next time,

Roxana
