David Rowles, one of our third year students, scooped the top prize in the inaugural Superyacht UK Design Competition at the CWM FX London Boat Show.

Sharing his views of the competition, David said: “It has been an amazing experience as I am totally enthused by boats. The competition has presented a lot of opportunities and there is so much to be achieved from being involved. It will also help to get us recognised. The invitation was a nice surprise, and I entered without hesitating.”

Automotive & Transport Design

The show began yesterday with a VIP and Press preview, during which we enjoyed awards success with Product Design graduand Alex Daniels finishing runner up in the Business Design Centre New Designer of the Year Award 2014 (Part 2). This was arguably the highest accolade of the evening awarded to an Industrial Designer (first place going to Graphics). Alex was presented with his trophy, a cheque for £500 and a bottle of Absolut vodka by keynote speaker Sir John Sorrell. Alex’s design for a walking aid caught the judges’ attention by innovatively addressing an un-glamorous design problem. They commented: “Taking on an unglamorous product, Alex has brought a fresh new approach and an elegant solution to the walking aid. He has made it into an inclusive product suitable for both the elderly and injured.”

Ciao Milano!

Interior Design Excursion: Milan, 7th – 12th April

This past week, ID staff accompanied a group of first and second year Interior Design students to Milan’s eagerly awaited Design Week 2014. Arguably the most important event in the design calendar, every Easter Milan plays host to the world’s largest exhibition of domestic and commercial furnishings. Events, product launches, pop-ups and parties are spread across the city, allowing visitors a glimpse of the ‘hidden Milan’ that is so rarely seen during the rest of the year – doors are opened, courtyards revealed, prosecco corks are popped, and the entire city is transformed into an immersive and extravagant showroom.
