‘Quicklinks + Quickmarks = Double quick feedback’ [Wed 26/3 – Research Seminar Series]
‘Quicklinks + Quickmarks = Double quick feedback’ – Hilary Nesi, Benet Vincent and Daniel Quinn
Wednesday 26th March, 5-6pm, George Eliot Building 403
The first part of this talk and workshop will introduce the BAWE Quicklinks project, our initiative to exploit corpora to help those giving feedback to students on their writing. The idea behind the project is to identify recurrent language problems in students’ writing which we can then address using corpus outputs. In response to a particular issue, we find examples of more appropriate usage in the British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus, a collection of student university assignments. We create hyperlinks to these examples to illustrate appropriate usage (see screencast here). The hyperlink can then be inserted into student work to encourage them to review and correct (or improve) their work. We will explain how this works with reference to Turnitin and specifically to Quickmarks – easy to insert comments in the feedback studio.
The workshop part of the talk will introduce the set of Quickmarks which we have created and which those giving feedback can import into the Turnitin interface, edit and use freely. We will give participants the opportunity to try out the Quickmarks and edit sets (and the Quickmarks themselves) according to their own preferences before eliciting participant reactions and discussing some of the key issues involved.
We believe this initiative has benefits to lecturers in terms of efficiency and to students receiving feedback in terms of increased language awareness, so please come along if you can.
Important: if you are intending to attend, please bring a device which you can use to access Moodle and thereby Turnitin. You will also need to download the set of Quickmarks which we have created and upload it to Turnitin feedback studio. The file and a screencast showing how this is done can be found here.
