BA English Language and TEFL students work towards an Internationally Recognised Teaching Qualification.

An opportunity for an internationally recognised teaching qualification is available for students on the BA English Language and TEFL degree.

On Monday 12th April 2021, instead of queuing up for the re-opening of shops, 8 second year students and 7 final year students were queuing up to take the Cambridge TKT and TKT: Young Learners qualification at the Coventry campus (all socially-distanced and COVID compliant of course!). The Teaching Knowledge Test from Cambridge Assessment English is ‘a series of modular teaching qualifications which test your knowledge in specific areas of English language teaching’ (https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/teaching-english/teaching-qualifications/tkt/).

The 2nd year students were taking modules 1, 2, and 3 to see what level of knowledge they had gained on the degree so far. This year they have been taking the BA TEFL modules Principals and Practice of TEFL 1 and 2 which includes assessed Teaching Practice sessions. These sessions take place in the evenings online where adult English Language learners from around Coventry take free English classes delivered by our student teachers. These lessons are delivered under the guidance of our TEFL trainers.

Final year students take the TEFL module Teaching Young Learners which introduces the key principles underlying TYL including the needs and expectations of learners, teaching approaches and methodologies and materials. Students also gain an awareness of typical TYL content and contexts and this prepares them for the Cambridge TKT: Young learners module.
