The Disintegration of Euro-Atlanticism and New Authoritarianism Global Power-Shift

School of Humanities Research Seminar, Weds 20 March 16:00, Coventry University, George Elliot Building, G31

This talk discusses the argument advanced by the two speakers in their last monograph, namely the connection between the rise of China, the disintegration of the Euro-Atlantic assemblage and the regime of permanent austerity propounded by its elites. In this competitive global context, the speakers discuss the phenomenon of “new authoritarianism” as a process emanated structurally from the needs of the western neo-liberal system to survive, rather than as an agential phenomenon embedded in civil society and finding expression is extreme right-wing “populist” movements. The Disintegration of Euro-Atlanticism and New Authoritarianism – Global Power-Shift, published by Palgrave this year, completes a trilogy of works on the issues of global power-shift and neo-imperialism, themes which Fouskas and Gökay have worked on together for more than 20 years.
