Coventry University has been named ‘Modern University of the Year’ for an unprecedented third time in a row in theTimes and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016, which is published in full on Sunday.
The University also continues to be a hit amongst students, ranking top in the UK in the guide’s student satisfaction classification which rates higher education institutions by the quality of their teaching and student experience.
Sunday’s league table sees Coventry place higher than any other UK modern university (those granted university status since 1992) and once again retain the ‘Modern University of the Year’ title which it has held since 2013.
For the second year running Coventry ranks in the country’s top two for the quality of its teaching – a measure which combines with its student experience score to place Coventry as the best amongst all British universities for student satisfaction overall.
The guide’s judges commend Coventry’s innovative approach to higher education, highlighting Coventry University College and its recently-launched Scarborough Campus as unique and particularly forward-looking developments in the sector.
The latest rankings come just a couple of weeks after Coventry’s nomination for the ‘University of the Year’ accolade in the annual Times Higher Education Awards, and follow its success in May in the Guardian University Guide 2016 which saw the University break into the UK’s top 15 for the first time.
Vice-chancellor Professor John Latham said:
All of our staff and students can be immensely proud of this achievement. Coventry University’s performance and innovation in this competitive sector continues to be recognised and applauded, and it is a testament to the wonderful team effort and enterprising spirit in our institution that we’ve secured the prestigious title of ‘Modern University of the Year’ three times and are once again leading the way in terms of student satisfaction.
This latest news is a welcome success story to add to Coventry’s recent achievements, and while rankings such as these are a useful reference point – particularly for students and parents – we are nevertheless determined to define ourselves by what we’re achieving above and beyond our league table position.
We’ve been able to show consistently, for example, that what our students experience here at Coventry is a rare combination of excellent teaching, great international opportunities and – importantly – strong personal development. We are helping our students to improve their confidence, communication skills and ability to tackle problems to a greater degree than other universities, and our students are telling us that this means more to them than league table performance. As ever, it is the value we’re adding to their experience that is making Coventry stand out.
The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016 will be published in full in the Sunday Times newspaper on Sunday 20th September, with follow-up features in the Times newspaper on the Monday and Tuesday.
