Research Talk: Three Recent Robots
Please join us for our final talk of the semester, given by Tom Knowles (English, CAMC). Tom’s talk is titled: Three Recent Robots: Jeanette Winterson’s Frankissstein, Ian McEwan’s Machines Like Me, and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun
Date: 4pm, 14th April 2021
Abstract: This paper will consider three recent novels that engage with the moral, political and social ramifications of advancements in artificial intelligence, gene editing and robotics. I ask three questions of these novels: To what extent do they engage with the substantial science-fictional heritage on these issues? How might they help us to imagine the posthuman? And do they risk simply re-centring the human at a time when we should be alert to the more-than-human world?
