7 great alternatives to clubbing

The world of nightclubs can be exciting, unpredictable and can leave you with some great stories to tell. However, these places can also be loud, dirty, sweaty, smelly, terrifying… basically an all-round assault on every one of your senses!

So if clubs aren’t really your thing, or you’ve burnt yourself out lately, why not try something a little different? Here are some great things to do when you can’t face another night of stumbling round the dance floor.

Dinner date!

Friends having dinner

Ok, so we’re not exactly re-inventing the wheel here, but going out for a nice meal with friends is a classic alternative to doing Jägerbombs and throwing up on someone’s shoes. Good food, great conversation and a relaxing environment make a really fun, chilled night out. Plus, it’s always nice to be waited on!

Hit the flicks!

Friends at the cinema

First things first, go watch a horror movie together! And if none of you like horror movies, well that’s even better! Watching a scary film can be a truly bonding experience for friends, especially when you dissect the movie afterwards and have to all sleep in the same room with the lights on. (This works for all other movies of course, but watching your friend freak out during Paranormal Activity is much more entertaining, trust me).

Ice ice baby…

Cov Blaze ice hockey team

Now we’re getting a little more out there. The Coventry Skydome is lucky enough to play host to the Coventry Blaze ice hockey team’s home games. The matches are fast-paced, exciting and easy to follow, making it a decent night out even if you’ve never watched a minute of hockey before. There are fun competitions to take part in, a full bar (in case you really can’t go without the drink for one night) and big angry blokes on teeny ice skates. What’s not to love?

Rock the Ricoh!

The Ricoh Coventry

It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the events taking part at the Ricoh Arena. Many people only think of it as Coventry City FC’s home ground, however, there’s a lot more to it than that! Big bands, exhibitions, conventions and a variety of other sporting events are just some examples of what’s on offer. So save up a bit of that beer money and use it to grab a ticket to something different, you might discover a new interest or hobby.

Win a pub quiz!

Pub sign with events on

Throughout Coventry, surrounding cities such as Birmingham, Wolverhampton and even as far as London, you can find all manner of pubs, bars and bigger venues with themed nights and live entertainment. You can experience comedy nights, open mics, live music, quizzes and more. It’s all the fun of going on a night out, but without the risk of a girl throwing a handbag at your face – although this does depend on the kind of pub quizzes you go to…

Get social with societies!

Musical Theatre society

Whether you’re into salsa dancing, gender equality, motorcycles or poetry, you’re bound to find something you like in Coventry University’s great range of sports and societies. You can always put together a night out or throw a party for your society and really get to know each other.

Embrace evening classes!

Learning to dance

On the other hand, if you feel like you need a night away from the university bubble, why not try an evening class? You could join a book group, take up a musical instrument, study a martial art, or any other kind of art actually… Wanting to learn something completely new outside of your course isn’t a bad thing, it’s a great thing. Grab a friend or go it alone, and see what else is out there for you.

Let us know what good alternatives you’ve found to hitting the clubs. Remember, a big part of university is trying new things, so don’t be held back by the attraction of little shorts and packed dance floors.
