What to Ask Yourself Before an Open Day

Open Days can be a bit of an overwhelming experience. There’s people everywhere, tons of stands and stalls and loads going on, it can be tough to work out where to start. This is why you need to be prepared and ask yourself some important questions, the main one being, what do I really want to get out of this experience?

So with that said, UnCOVered is here to make the process really simple so you can be ready to ask all the questions you need to at your next Open Day.

1. What career do I want to go into?

dreams

It’s the same old story from when you were a little kid, what do you want to be when you grow up? And as cool as being a dinosaur would’ve been, it’s time to have a serious think. Let’s say you’re really passionate about fitness and like the idea of being a physiotherapist or a trainer. Now you’ve got a great starting point for the Open Day!

Find those who’re in the know about the courses that relate to your field and ask for their advice. Do you want to travel as part of your course? Do you want to get work experience as part of it? Be open to what they tell you, and make notes so you don’t forget.

2. What passions do I want to pursue?

weird

These days we all have a lot of different passions, from video games and movies to rock climbing and LARPing, and it’s important to keep these passions going at university.

Sports teams and societies are the perfect ways to meet like-minded people, develop the passions you have and embed yourself further into university life. Make your passions known at the Open Day and discuss what sports teams or societies might be right for you. Or, on the other hand, how you could go about creating your own.

3. Where do I want to live?

data

A huge part of how your university experience will unfold depends on where you want to live. You might want to make life simple and cut costs by staying at home, or maybe you feel it’s time to fly the nest and are looking to stay in student accommodation. It’s not the kind of decision you can make over night and on your own. Before arriving at the Open Day make sure you’ve discussed all the options with your family first.

If you’re not quite sure what you want to do yet, that’s fine. This is why Open Days exist! You’ll soon get a better understanding of what life will be like depending on your choice by asking around.

4. How do I want to spend my time?

time

It’s the little things that make the big things, and it’s no different at university. Whether you want to be out on the town, dancing in clubs and dining in restaurants, or out exploring a new city and doing a bit of shopping, you need to do your research.

Luckily, there’re plenty of student ambassadors around at Open Days to discuss what everyday life on campus is really like. From the best nights out, to the quiet, chilled out spots we all need sometimes, they can talk you through it all.

Once you’ve really got things clear in your head of what you want to do, choosing the right university will be an absolute breeze. Check out Joe’s post, What to Ask at a Coventry University Open Day, for more great ideas on how to get the most out of the day.

We’ll be holding our next Open Day on June 18th and hope to see as many of your there as possible! Please see our Open Days page for more details!
