Parents Welcome Event

Freshers Week – Meet the parents

This weekend hundreds of new students will move into their accommodation, say goodbye to their loved ones and begin to settle down to enjoy uni life – possibly beginning by working out how to make the bed! Whilst this evening is chock full of activities organised by our Student Union , after a day focused on collecting keys and unloading car boots, there was also another important element to this weekend – the Parents Welcome Event.

The welcome event gave parents/guardians/whoever-made-your-dinner-up-until-this-point a chance to see the campus again, receive a talk dedicated to your field of study and be treated to a delicious afternoon tea. As I’m a new media student my parents were invited to attend the Art & Design talk, and I tagged along! Our talk was led by Dr Seymour Roworth-Stokes, Dean and Professor of Design at the Coventry School of Art & Design, as well as speakers from the Creative Futures team who were there to discuss employability and support after graduating.

The Dean’s talk focused on reassuring parents that their charges (that’s you) would be kept safe, looked after and supported throughout their time at the university. He discussed the buzzing uni social life, the safety and security of life on campus and around the city (For example – our CCTV links with the city council CCTV!), the academic support available and the success of the Art & Design department.

Meanwhile in student land, the first wave of people moved in to their accommodation today! If you were one of those people then remember to access your hall’s facebook group here, you might also want to read our tips on how to get to know your neighbours!

Freshers week day events kick off from Monday, see the full daytime timetable here. The social media team will be reporting back on the main events throughout the week – so if you see us wandering around with a camera come and say hello!
