What to pack for uni

Congratulations! All your hard work has paid off and you’re preparing to make the big move to start your degree course. Whether you’re living in student accommodation, or in private accommodation, moving away for the first time can be scary and confusing. What kitchen utensils do I need? Do I need bedding? All these questions should be answered by your accommodation provider, but here is a handy guide of what you may need.

Kitchen

Depending on your accommodation provider, you may need to bring slightly larger items such as a kettle or a toaster, but check with your landlord or letting agency to find out.

Most student accommodations are fully fitted with kitchen equipment and appliances, but not utensils.

What you will need:

    • Cutlery
    • Crockery – plates, bowls, dishes
    • Pots and Pans
    • Dish cloths – for the sink and for drying up afterwards!
    • Oven gloves
    • Utensils – spatula, scissors, wooden spoons, chopping knifes, chopping board etc.
    • Washing up liquid and washing detergent
    • Airer

Bedroom

Some student accommodations do provide a bedding pack for an additional fee, so if you’re travelling far or need the room in the car this could be a useful option. If not, you’ll need everything from bedsheets to hangers.

What you will need:

    • Bedsheets
    • Duvet & Pillows
    • Mattress topper/protector for extra comfort
    • Clothes hangers
    • Extension lead
    • Storage boxes
    • Decorations – pictures of loved ones, fairy lights and anything else which will make you feel at home.

Study materials

Don’t forget that the real reason why you’re moving away from home, is to study! So make sure to include the essentials. Most universities and colleges do have a ‘loan a laptop’ scheme, so if you don’t have a computer don’t worry – you can borrow one whilst you’re on campus!

What you will need:

  • Stationery – e.g pens, pencils, coloured markers, ruler
  • Laptop/Computer if you have one.
  • Paper – lined/plain
  • Printer if needed
  • Any specialist equipment needed for your course.

Hopefully now you feel a bit more prepared to start your packing! Remember you won’t be moving to the middle of nowhere, you will be able to buy anything you forget/don’t have room for in your new town or city – so no need to panic.
