Crime at Christmas
Christmas is a wonderful time of year. But inevitably a small few ruin it for everyone. All kinds of crime is rife at Christmas; burglaries, scams, alcohol and drug related crime or violence. Now, we don’t want anyone to not enjoy the festive season to the full. But, it’s a good idea to be aware of how to prevent crime and keep yourself safe as you celebrate the season. Here’s our tips.
Burglaries and Thefts
- Keep presents and valuable items out of sight at home and in your vehicle. Crime is often opportunistic, so take steps to make it harder for someone to commit.
- Ensure you lock all doors and windows at home and that your vehicle is secure when not in use. Use off road parking if it is available to you at home or out and about while visiting friends and family or Christmas shopping.
- Think carefully about announcing on social media if you are away visiting family. You don’t want to advertise that your property is going to be empty.
Nights Out
- Try to stay within a group of people you know and trust.
- Plan your route home – whether this is booking a taxi or lift in advance, make sure you know how you will get back and who you will be travelling with.
- Drink in moderation – make sure you remain in control and alert. If you suspect you may be over the legal drink driving limit, do not get behind the wheel. Also, keep your drinks close by you and never unattended to limit the risk of anyone spiking your drink.
Scams
- If you wish to donate to a charity, ensure you hand over your money using official channels. If in doubt, contact the charity in advance. Be wary of individuals approaching or calling you claiming to be from a charity. If you’re not sure, take the person’s details and contact the charity separately.
- When it comes to purchasing the gift of the year, be careful of deals that sound too good to be true, they usually are! Shop with reputable brands and ensure you receive the appropriate receipts.
- Be wary of potentially bogus giveaways, gift cards and offers on and offline. Protect your personal details including your bank account information.
