Top 5 things you need to know about Clearing

Top 5 things you need to know about Clearing

It’s five days until Clearing opens, so we at Discuss thought it best to share our wisdom to demystify the process and give you our Top 5 things you need to know about Clearing.

Firstly, let’s go over the basics- what is Clearing exactly? Clearing is the process whereby applicants apply for remaining university course places if they did not receive any previous offers, did not meet the conditions of their offers, or who applied to UCAS after the application deadline.

Clearing begins on 18th August and runs until September.
You have a limited window of time to make a decision on your preferred course or institution. Available courses are listed on UCAS’ website but also in The Telegraph newspaper. It is advisable to browse the list and contact institutions regarding their entry criteria as soon as possible. However, there is no need to rush; take your time and think decisively. Consider each option carefully before you make your final decision.

Universities will be hosting open events
Many institutions will be running open events to help Clearing applicants make their final decision. It is advisable to visit the institutions you’re interested in (where possible) to ensure you’re happy with the campus and the course. Often on the spot offers are available, as well as course taster sessions and campus tours. Check with each individual institution regarding what’s available on the day before you travel.

All Clearing applications are managed by UCAS
UCAS is a great resource and is where the Clearing process is managed, so it’s sensible to get to know their website; find where course information and resources are in advance to eliminate unnecessary stress on the day. Once you have spoken to an institution and they have made you an offer, you will need to update your UCAS Track. You can only update your Track with one Clearing choice at a time.

There is an Exam Results Helpline
UCAS also run an Exam Results Helpline to offer you advice and support in making a Clearing application. The telephone number is:

0808 100 8000. If you get stuck, confused or just need to go through your options with someone, they are there to help.

Take care of yourself on the day
Whether your results are what you expected or not, Clearing can be an overwhelming time. Make sure you are proactive when Clearing opens but also ensure you take care of yourself on the day. It is advisable to have breakfast, even if you’re nervous about your results. Also, try to surround yourself with friends and family, or staff from your school or college, who can help support you in making your decision.
