LGBT History Month is Coming!

LGBT* History Month is celebrated annually within the UK, throughout the month of February.

There is lots going on this year in Coventry (more about that coming, keep your eyes peeled!) but first, in case you’re wondering what it’s all about, here’s our handy little guide…

What is LGBT* History Month?

It’s aimed at celebrating the lives, work and experiences of LGBT* people as well as promoting diversity, equality and awareness.

Why is LGBT* History Month important?

LGBT* History Month is an important event for everyone to take note of. Even if you don’t identify as LGBT*, the chances are that at some point in your life, you’re going to know somebody who does. 70% of LGBT* youth experience homophobic bullying in school, and that statistic doesn’t include people who experience homophobia without identifying as Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual! Plenty of straight people are subject to homophobic taunts and harassment too, LGBT* history month aims to combat this. There is little research into rates of transphobia in education, but the research that does exist, sadly suggests similarly high statistics.

Want to help? Check out Stonewall’s latest #NOBYSTANDERS campaign and take the pledge to stamp out bullying.

What does LGBT* history month actually do?

The team from LGBT* History Month work all year round to make the lives of LGBT* people better in education, the work place and the wider society. This raises the visibility of social injustices that LGBT* people often face, as well as highlighting the positivity and success of LGBT* people. Through educational tools and resources, they aim to combat popular misconceptions of LGBT* people as the victims of prejudice and instead highlight their roles as agents of social and political change.

Ok, Great. ..but what can I do?

For starters you can check out LGBT History Month’s official website. Here you will find lots of great information on how you can donate to, campaign for, or support their work by challenging discrimination in your day to day life. You can also follow them on Twitter @LGBTHM to get all the latest updates and info throughout the month, as well as lots of interesting LGBT* media features and local events.

Finally, keep your eyes peeled right here on our unCOVered blog, Twitter, and Facebook where we’ll bring you updates on what we’ve got going on right here on campus and let you know how you can get involved!
