Scarborough Surf: UnCOVered

When you think of surfing, Scarborough probably isn’t the first place that springs to mind. Most people consider the West country  to be the home of the best surf spots in the UK, but think again...look East!

Scarborough’s Cayton Bay is home to some of the best surf in the UK, according to Scarborough Surf School tutor James. Waves regularly exceed 8ft, with perfect surf guaranteed almost all year round.

Don’t be put off by the slightly murky water, it’s due to the clay deposits deep under the water off-shore.

It should come as no surprise then, that Scarborough is home to the UK’s biggest professional surf event: Scarborough Surf Festival. The festival takes place annually over a weekend in October, and 2015 marks its 5th year. It attracts thousands to the North-East to watch pro surfers battle it out for the Pro Surf Tour Title.

It’s more than just surfing though, Scarborough’s Surf Festival offers a great day out for the whole family. There’s local food stands and trade stalls alongside a huge display of classic VW’s (yes, including the camper vans!), and a live mountain bike freestyle stunt show from Zero Gravity!

UK Pro Surf‘s Steve Parrott explains why the festival is held in Scarborough:

“The fact that we are now back for a second year is a reflection of the quality of surf in Scarborough. We listen to our surfers and we don’t take them where they don’t want to go.

They recognise the North Bay is a natural ampitheatre which showcases the surfing.
There are very few places that have that!”
