Top Christmas toys from your childhood
For the majority of us, the older you get the less delightful presents you get for Christmas. It’s a horrific truth that at some point we will all have to deal with. Be honest, who reading this hasn’t at some point looked across to a middle aged relative opening a pack of socks from M&S and thought, dear God, I hope that never happens to me! Well that reality will come… but until then we have decided to take a trip down memory lane and look at some of the top Christmas toys from our childhood. Enjoy.
Furby
With its big fluttering eyes, thick coat of fur and big floppy ears, this cute critter became a Christmas sensation with children across the UK, putting it firmly at the top of their wish list to Santa. What no one knew at the time was just how incredibly annoying these things would turn out to be. For some reason after being greeted for 100th time in Furby’s unique dialogue, it got incredibly annoying. Who would have thought? Top tip: If you have an original Furby, lying around they’re currently fetching a tidy sum on Ebay.
Dream phone
“I know who it is, but I’m not telling – haha.” Does that ring a bell? If so, then you played one of the best dating board games ever! If you were lucky, you’d wind up with the blonde haired hunk, if not…well, let’s just not go there.
Tamagotchi
How could anyone forget? As if from nowhere these simple, yet massively addictive toys took the UK and Christmas of 97 by storm. What’s difficult to understand looking back is, why? Seriously, why where these toys so sort after? Think about it… cleaning up digital poop? No thanks!
Game Boy
One of the most successful handheld consoles of our generation, the original Game Boy hit our shelves in early 90s. Since its launch, the Game Boy has become one of the most well-known gaming devices in the world. If you can remember unwrapping one of these gems, inserting your first game cartridge and subsequently losing hours of your childhood to the thrill of pressing A/B as your heroic Italian plumber navigates his way through the simple, yet surprising deadly terrain, then we at Discover salute you.
Barbie and Ken
How could we not include the timeless classic Barbie and Ken? After hitting the children’s toy scene in the 50s/60s this power couple rapidly began their rise to worldwide stardom. Fast forward almost 60 years and they’re still going strong. Chances are, you had ones of these, or knew someone who did.
Heelys
Last but not least we have Heelys. There was nothing quite like kicking back your heels, feeling the wind in your face as your parents shout behind you “slow down!” If you owned a pair of Heelys, you’ll know exactly what we mean.
We’ll be honest, this list could have easily covered 20+ toys. But hey, we can’t sit around writing about toys all day… no matter how much we want to.
