CU Scarborough students supporting vulnerable children and adults in Romania

Students and staff from CU Scarborough are embarking upon their first field trip to Oradea in Western Romania.  Early Years and Health students will work alongside vulnerable adults and children to gain valuable experience, share their skills and deliver aid to a number of placements.

The week long expedition will incorporate visits to a homeless project that cares for people of all ages, a state run orphanage and one of Romania’s first all-inclusive schools.

They will stay with the organisation Caminul Felix and experience their care of young and abandoned children within their two villages. Caminul Felix has been looking after the physical, emotional and economic needs of Romanian children since 1990 and strive to provide a safe haven for children to feel secure, heal from the past and discover life. They are also expanding internationally into Eastern Europe and Africa and provide training for current and adoptive parents.

The trip will help students bring their course material to life. Early Years student will look at how childhood development and learning is impacted by the circumstances that young people face. Health students need to have an understanding of how social, environmental, cultural, economic, political and structural factors influence public health and this trip is a great opportunity to develop an international perspective. Students of both subjects will collaborate to explore the connections and solutions they can identify between both areas of interest.

However, for the trip to be a success, the students need your help! They are collecting aid and donations to take with them on this trip. This may include:

  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, sponges, flannels, toilet bags and miniature toiletries.
  • Hats, gloves and socks for all ages
  • Toys, activities, pens, pencils and felt tip pens
  • Clothes, in particular nightwear, for all ages
  • Towels and bedding
  • Medical supplies, particularly incontinence pads.

If you feel you can help in any way please email Claire Barwick or Yasmin Stefanov-King. Alternatively, please leave any donations at our Helpdesk at CU Scarborough, Ashburn Road, YO11 2JW. All donations will be gratefully received and make a huge difference to the lives of vulnerable people in Romania.

We would love to hear from you, thank you for your support!
