What is the worst job out there?

Most of us have had a bad job. Perhaps it was the unpaid overtime, the long commute or a difficult boss that made working there so tough. Or, perhaps you were unlucky enough to have all three of these at once in one unpleasant and hopefully short-lived position.

However, as is the case with most things, it’s likely that someone else out there has it worse. So, to put things into perspective we’ve scoured the internet looking for the worst jobs possible.

Gold farmer

Interesting job title? Think again. Gold Farming involves performing extremely menial tasks repetitively in video games for many hours at a time. The goal is to earn currency in that game’s world (usually gold, hence the name) to be then sold to other players for real money.

So, what’s so bad about this job? You’re getting paid to play games?

Yes, that’s true. But playing games in the most boring way, spending up to 12 hours performing the same task, with no outside interaction, no change in the task and almost no internal interaction as these tasks are performed in complete solitude.

Pet food taster

There’s no hiding what this job could involve. Pretty much exactly what it says on the tin, and more.

Pet food tasters are employed to ensure that the food we give to our pets is nutritionally sound. Then they need to ensure that the scent will be pleasant to the animal it is being designed for. However, at some point, the Pet food taster will have to dine on tinned pet food to check for taste and texture. Delicious!

Portaloo cleaner

If you’ve ever been to a festival, or a large outdoor event, you will have encountered a portaloo. They’re often warm because of the weather and they’re usually dirty and smelly from the use of lots of drunken revellers.

Anyway, we don’t need to go into any more detail about why this is a grim job.

Snake milker

Yes, that’s right, sounds odd as snakes are reptiles and don’t lactate so the job actually refers to extracting venom from the snake.

The venom is then used to make antivenom and for other research purposes.

Since this job is extremely dangerous, and the job title sounds pretty cool, at the very least it sounds impressive. That being said, no amount of money is worth risking serious injury.

Professional line stander

If you’ve ever walked past an Apple Store, or clothing shop right before a launch you’ll know that for certain products excited consumers can queue for hours, even up to days, to ensure they get the latest gadget or pair of trainers.

Obviously queuing for long periods of time has its downsides, weather, boredom or risking being vulnerable outside late at night. That is where a professional line stander comes in. These professionals will, for a fee, take your place in a queue so that you can kick back and relax while someone else waits in line for whatever item you’re after.
